The world largely runs on commerce & money. If you’ve got ample money, then you can largely do what you want, within the law, with reasonable freedom, in most areas throughout the world.
You can do what you want without money, but if you were your true self, then most of those who hold opportunities in commerce will likely not want to be associated with you, and you could very well be left penniless.
This, in general, is why free people have put up with the constraints of mainstream society within the context of commerce. Inconveniently selling off their time, curbing their self-expression, etc. This has been a fundamental trade-off that has limited personal happiness throughout society.
However, although it has always been doable, we are now in an age where many of us have ample opportunity to cut ties from third party decision makers and establish our own independent income streams, in a way that does not put notable constraints upon our personal lives.
In the past, people have had to largely pursue this goal through third party decision makers (like employers, managers, partners, investors, etc). This is why the term “Fuck You Money” came into being. Where one toes the lines of decision makers in mainstream commerce for long enough to earn enough money to say “Fuck you!” and then go off and do what s/he wants in their life.
Probably until about this latest decade of the 2000s, we’ve largely been in this long standing age of “Fuck You Money”. Now, very much thanks to the powerful influence of the internet, we are now able to drop the “money” part of the equation and now declare that we are simply in the age of “Fuck You”.
The Age of Fuck You means that many people can reasonably pursue making enough money to support outwardly living a life as their natural inner-self, without needing to fear economic castration. Many people, primarily in first-world countries, can directly pursue this today without anyone’s permission.
This is a big shift for society because it removes a fundamental limit of happiness. Having to suppress one’s inner-self, in fear of not having the security of their basic needs & lifestyle resources, is a big happiness killer. Yet that has largely been the state of the world for a long time.
We are still only in the beginning stages of this shift, but I believe the future looks bright as technology shifts & culture shifts continue to influence the world.
So, instead of pursuing “fuck you money”, just say “Fuck you!” to enslaving yourself to the social chains of mainstream commerce and then create your own value exchange opportunities that do not rely upon you outwardly acting any different than you do personally when hanging out with your best friends.
Welcome to the Age of Fuck You!
Now, even though the Age of Fuck You brings us the foundation for huge improvement in personal happiness throughout society, there is still another major social constraint that is more fundamental to humanity, which has the same effect of crippling free people’s fulfilling self-expression.
You see, even if people are predictably earning a good “fuck you” living on their own, most of these people will still not be able to fully embrace this “fuck you” freedom and be their true natural selves in their personal lives.
For example, plenty of guys who drink beer & watch football with their buddies won’t have the balls to openly pursue their passion for ballet dancing…all due to a core fear of rejection, that is extremely pervasive throughout human nature.
This is a tough one, the major effects of this innate social fear will likely never be fully resolved until the Age of Simulated Reality is here. But, there is another broad paradigm shift in society I believe can happen in the meantime, which can enable many people throughout our world to openly live their personal lives in a very unfiltered fashion.
I call this the Age of Personal Exploration. Where society tips to the point where it is normal & acceptable to explore, discover, & live out the truly custom & unfiltered personal traits, beliefs, hobbies, preferences, etc, of each unique individual.
Right now, in aggregate, all flavors of life are out there happening, as most of us are aware via the internet. However, on the ground, personal rejection & negative judgment is extremely prevalent and is still overpowering & killing off “long tail” aspects of good people’s personal fulfillment, throughout society, in favor of the mainstream norms. This is subconscious, collective totalitarianism in action, my friends. Its regime has been in power since the dawn of time.
What can actually take us from the Age of Fuck You to the Age of Personal Exploration?
I think a couple things of note are the impact & momentum of the internet as well as the ongoing progression of the Age of Fuck You…
The internet is very special because it is the first major mass media & communication platform where everyday people can almost engage the entire world as they please. We’ve already witnessed & have been notably impacted by our exposure to a much broader experience of human thought & activity via the internet. Overall, it continues to open our collective minds, increase our respect & tolerance of others’ lives, and further embrace the principle of personal liberty.
The progression of the Age of Fuck You will very likely have a notable impact on the long tail development of our individual identities. Due to having to “earn a living” through the suppressive social constraints of mainstream commerce, many people pay for that economic value with a chuck of their freedom of self-expression. This helps perpetuate a society that rejects truly unique individuals…which is what we all are, once we truly explore & know ourselves. You probably can feel a bit of this truth by identifying one or two of your personal fetishes that turn you on, which are definitely not openly accepted by the mainstream…yet. So, if billions of people have blindly accepted the suppression of their true selves, for a bit of economic opportunity or security, then this means that the natural motivation of personal exploration & truly unique identity development will also be perpetually cut off for many of these people. So, as more people throughout the world are able to join the Age of Fuck You, instead of having to trade their unique personal identities in for a meal ticket, it will help foster a natural surge & tolerance for personal exploration, which leads to unique identity development & more personally fulfilling self-expression.
The Age of Fuck You is great because many more people can predictably say “Fuck you!” to mainstream commerce, earn an independent living, and be able to openly live their own custom lifestyle. However, notice that there is still a “Fuck you!” involved. This means that the pervasive rejection & social conflict with openly living life as one’s truly unique self will still suppress the happiness potential realized from most people’s economic freedom. Hell, we currently have multi-billionaires who toe the lines of societal norms, only for this reason. So, we need to ultimately move beyond the Age of Fuck You into the Age of Personal Exploration, where it becomes mainstream to openly develop & live one’s life within very unique & personally fulfilling long tail realms, without overwhelming forces of rejection & social opposition.
Now, despite the mainstream limits of societies throughout the world, ALL of this goodness is achievable for motivated individuals right now today…always has been. You can live your life as if everyone is in the Age of Fuck You, the Age of Personal Exploration, and beyond. However, you do inherently take on more social risk and there are still limited opportunities, so you will likely need to muster & apply more confidence, diligence, & intelligence to predictably pull it off for many decades of time. With training & shifts in your psychology, you can predictably pursue this level of life though.
In my own life, I’ve largely polarized to this higher standard of a free & happy life and have given up on most of the world’s mainstream norms. It can definitely be a challenge, but I believe it can be predictably won over time, and very much worth the pain & effort endured to get there.
Beyond these general paradigms of the Age of Fuck You and the Age of Personal Exploration, the next big thing I see in store for humanity is the Age of Simulated Reality. With the ability to control one’s reality with precision, relative to their core senses & sense of personal meaning, it is like having heaven on earth. At this point, assuming our basic economic & biological lives are independently secure, it won’t really matter what the perceptions of others are, as our realities will be segmented & fully customized for maximum personal happiness.
