Believe in Yourself

A lot of people are stuck between the job and entrepreneur mindset. I’ve never felt that way towards my career but I completely understand it. A large part of it that causes uncertainty between keeping the job and pursuing your business idea is a fear of failure.

The ideal entrepreneur would not be afraid to fail. The ideal entrepreneur would analyze the opportunities, the risks, and pursue the most logical path without taking time out for emotion. Most people aren’t at this point though so let’s look at reality.

So you think about not having any security from a job, how you aren’t exactly sure what to do to get started, what if you do fail and aren’t able to get a good job again, and how will it impact your family if it doesn’t work out as planned? These are all important things to think about. They matter.

Some more things to think about…

What are your ultimate goals for your life? If by staying at your job you are guaranteed not to meet these ultimate goals then you should quit no matter what.

If succeeding in your business venture would give you and your family the life you’ve dreamed of then why kill the possibility of that dream by choosing the opposite?

How many real chances have you given up in your life already to pursue your dreams? How many more real chances do you have left to take? How many do you believe you need to take to succeed in the end?

Is there a way you can pursue your job and business at the same time until the business can support you fulltime?

Expect a struggle…

I won’t lie. The odds are statistically against you in succeeding as an entrepreneur. There are different variations of the statistic but about 90% of all businesses fail in their first 5 years and of the 10% that succeed, 90% of those fail within the next 5 years.

So why am I saying “Believe in yourself?” What I am saying here is believe in yourself enough to take an objective look at everything so you can make a good decision, not one clouded by the usual doubt and fear.

Too many people sell themselves short in this position and stay with their jobs without considering everything. Realize that there are entrepreneurs out there who have made tens of millions who don’t know much about business at all. They exist. The fact is that you most likely can be successful in entrepreneurship if you full apply yourself. If you do this and make a sound effort to always make good decisions then I believe the odds are in almost anyone’s favor to be successful over the long term. The problem is that most people do not keep up the effort properly, which is why we have that statistic.

I’m not betting that I will fail but I know it can happen to me. I am willing to spend decades producing just enough to put food in my stomach if that meant I was pursuing the most logical path toward my ultimate goal.

P.S. This applies for those who are already entrepreneurs who are thinking about the possibility of pursuing something different or bigger.
